Week of Feb. 2nd Blog Post

February 9, 2009 · 1 Comment

In an attempt to organize the many blogs I’m discovering. I thought I use this blog site as a collection point. Each week I will try to post the links with a brief overview of the newest blog post. My goal is to make it easier for my staff to find blogs either by other educators or blogs related to educational issues. In just the first week I collected at least 30 different forms of blogs. But to not overload staff I will try to limit my post to just 5 a week.

Week #1 (Feb. 2nd – 8th)

Mrs. Smoke .. Tech teacher from Andover, Ks. http://mrssmoke.onsugar.com/ This week “Educational Blogs You Should Be Investigating”. She has created a blog of other blogs broken down by grade level, curriculum and subject matter. Wow .. great stuff.

Richard Byrne high school teacher from Maine. Free Tech stuff for teachers … http://www.freetech4teachers.com/ The newest blog deals with Geography tools. But you will find stuff for all curriculum areas on his blog site.

Steve Hargadon is the Director of the K12 Open Technologies Initiative http://www.stevehargadon.com/2009/01/some-things-ive-learned-about-building.html has a blog on “Some Things I’ve Learned About Building Effective Social Networks”

The Journal (this is a collection of writers) .. http://www.thejournal.com/the/21stcenturyskills/home/ The current blog entry is on 21st Century Skills.

Read Write Web by Ravit Lichtenberg .. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/10_ways_social_media_will_change_in_2009.php the current blog “10 Ways Social Media Will Change in 2009″.

Lips

February 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

On Feb. 9th I will he hosting a number of 30 minute break out sessions. The training sessions are designed as hands on. To speed up the process I’m placing the information teachers need right here in this blog. This will also serve as a place teachers can return to review if they so choose.

I was going to provide training on Lips a free software program that can be downloaded off the web. Simply enter text into the dialog box and he play. The computer reads the text back to you. For those with Macs we know that the OS X operating system does the same thing. Lips is just another option teachers can use.

Assist. Technology Director will handle the 30 minute hands on for this program as well as 30 minutes on using our whitelist (our district blocking program) and 60 minute session on Paperless Classroom

General Sites

I asked Plurkers (other educators) if they were given 30 minutes to be with a high school staff what websites would they want to share. The following are what was provided ( I did eliminate some of the suggestions since it would take more then 30 minutes). Plus many I’ve added on my own.

Strategies & Ideas to reach the 21st Century Learners … http://21ideas.pbwiki.com/

Scottleysays …. cooltoolsforschools.wikispaces.com/…This site has a ton of additional links. I mean a ton. (presentations, video, slideshows, widgets, quizzes, collaborative, research, creativity, image, writing, music, drawing, organizing, storage, audio, mapping and graphing.

Pollingeverywhere … http://www.pollingeverywhere.com requires you to have a FREE account. With this site you can create questions and ask students to answer them using their cell phones. Questions can be true/false, multi-choice and short answers. I created the questions before class. Then add the question to the slides of my PPT. When the slide pops up students use their phones to give me their answers. In turn I then show on the screen the site as the answers come in. This allows me to check for learning. Something new I tried was ask students to create questions for a study guide. Then they would post the questions and as they showed up on the screen the class answered. Pretty neat.

Heidisays … I agree with Scottley lots of great stuff on it. A cool high school blog site (you’ve all seen blog sites – besides that’s what your looking at now), perhaps a good hs wiki  (not going to do this one either) or plurk (plurk is a 30 minute presentation on it’s own).

judyb64says ….     www.4teachers.org …   This is a site you been shown before. 4Teachers.org works to help you integrate technology into your classroom by offering online tools and resources. This site helps teachers locate and create ready-to-use Web lessons, quizzes, rubrics and classroom calendars. There are also tools for student use. Discover valuable professional development resources addressing issues such as equity, ELL, technology planning, and at-risk or special-needs students.

kawlibrariansays …. I would and do share:http://animoto.com/ this is a great site to create fast and easy videos. No more using iMov or other programs. It does require a FREE account.

- www.citationmachine.net … Citation Machine is an interactive web tool designed to assist high schoolcollege, anduniversity students, their teachers, and independent researchers in their effort to respect other people’s intellectual properties. To use Citation Machine.

www.mywebspiration.com Webspiration makes it easy to collaborate and share documents by simply sending an invite. Everyone works on the same document, contributing, posting comments, and viewing changes. Webspiration is ideal for team projects, study groups, reviewing and commenting on documents and co-authoring materials. You must create a FREE ACCOUNT to do this.

dmantz7says mind42.com … In Mind42, 42 is not only the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything! 42 means FOR TWO and indicates the collaborative character of mind42, because that is exactly what mind42 is: A collaborative browser-based online mind mapping tool. It allows you to manage all your ideas, whether alone, twosome or working together with the whole world. As mind42 runs inside the browser, installing mind mapping tools is no longer needed – for a hassle-free mindmapping experience. Just open the browser and launch the application when needed – it behaves like a classical desktop application! Mind42 is a web application – however, this doesn’t mean yout have to set your comfort aside. Mind42 is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) mind map editor supporting keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop, zooming and much more. No forms and lists which are generally used in web application. A real application – within your browser. You must create a FREE ACCOUNT.
