On August 12th, it was presented to the HHS that we consider purchasing a program to check plagiarism. Mr. Beam discuss the importance of explaining what Plagiarism is to students and having clear policies. What are your thoughts about this? Are you in favor of going down this path now or later?

Currently at our present budget situation, I see this as one expense we can do without, but think it is worth keeping on the burner for future years.

I don’t think it is worth spending $2,000. I do think, though, that we should emphasize it more in all classes. Plagiarism takes many forms and sometimes students aren’t even aware what they did was ethically wrong.

I agree with the comments above… another concern would be time. It might be a great resource or tool to use, but I have no idea how I long it would take me to use it. If I need to grade 60 speeches would that be a 30 minute thing to use or a 4 hours long ordeal… I would concur with postponing the purchase or use of it at this point.

Because of money, I would agree with the other comments above. I agree we ALL need to be careful what we accept and what we give credit for. Somewhere I saw an interactive unit on plagiarism and if I find it, I will let everyone know.

I see this as a luxury and not a necessity. It would be nice to have in the future but I don’t feel we should spend the money on it at this time.

I have a video, “Plagiarism: It’s a Crime,” that I have shown previous years to the sophomores.
Section 1: What is plagiarism?
Section 2: Why do people plagiarize?
Section 3: Types of plagiarism
Section 4: Avoiding plagiarism
The only class that has seen it is the current seniors. I didn’t show it last year.
In addition here is a web site for discussion & I have a worksheet I used for note taking while students watched the video.

Maybe the video could be shown in AEP on Tuesdays & Thursdays — a section a time — would take 2 weeks — but that way all teachers could be discussing the issues & importance to all students.

Why does the above say I posted at 8:44 p.m. My computer clock and wall clock say it’s now 3:45 p.m.

Maybe before an expensive program we could look at other training as a staff first (such as Karen S’ materials) and go from there?

Karen S – Probably a setting that Alan needs to make to put it on US Central Time Zone. We will see if he actually reads these comments and fixes it?!?!?

I think education of plagiarism is the answer . I would love the program to be available at some time, but if we need to watch $$$$ this year, let’s wait. We can just do a better job of being proactive by discussing and educating on the specifics of plagiarism.

I have also seen something really recently on plagiarism..will try to remember what and where and pull it out. Let’s hold off on the $ and see what we can do better ourselves. If we could better educate ourselves, as a staff, and be more consistent on discussing it, I think it would help. I agree that students don’t totally understand it. I don’t think all of us adults do either.

I agree–with the budget cuts, let’s wait, unless the English Dept really feels that we need it. As professionals, if we find info this would be something very beneficial to share during CFG’s. I will try to be on the lookout for more info.
