This morning during our science PLC we had Alex do a demonstration on the Kan Ed Test Builder. We were talking about using it for pre and post assessments for our science classes. The discussion “evolved” further.

One area we started looking into was the options the student have on their own. One is the practice questions where students can take the practice questions for the standards. Students can earn “trophies” for getting over 80 percent on an standard on at least 10 questions. What if we created a incentive for students to get online and earn trophies for Math, Science, Reading, or Social Studies? For example, what if freshman science and biology were offered extra credit percentage point on the semester final for every science trophy they earn as long as they have taken at least 25 questions for the indicator? This is something students could work on in AEP, a few extra minutes in class, etc. Could the same thing apply to math or social studies? How much is it worth? If a student earns enough trophies prior to the state assessment, can they bump a 1/3 of a letter grade in the class?

One thing we found out is that we had never looked at it from how a student accesses the LS Testbuilder on KanEd Desktop. Carol set me up a Willie Wildcat student account that we can get in an play with. Feel free to log in to the KanEd Portal and check it out. The username is wwildcat, subscription – hhs, and password – willie.

Here is a link to a sample of Willie’s science indicators and trophies so far. (if my link works)

Just some ideas to ponder. What other ideas are out there??? Have other areas been using this site with students and has science just been that far behind?

Here is a better link to copy and paste into your browser to see the trophies page since the last one did not work.
